Pioneers of Port AdelaidePrint Page
The plaque, erected in 1996, commemorates the pioneers of Port Adelaide and gives the history of Pioneer Park.
Pioneer Park was formerly the Alberton Cemetery which was closed in 1874, however the last burial was recorded in 1930. The land was transferred to Port Adelaide Council in 1938 and developed as a park in 1996.
The Portonian Walk was created in the park in 2003 and offers more than a name recorded in stone and embedded in history. The names are now reinforced by a permanent data-base that will keep the name, the memory and the years safely available for future generations. It is not necessary that one of your ancestors must have been buried in the Alberton Cemetery to enable an engraved paver to be laid, any deceased Port Adelaide resident can be permanently remembered with a paver showing their name.

On 17 November 1847 the Governor of South Australia granted 4 acres of land to St Paul`s Church of England for burials, although the land was used for burials before that date.
