Emus have always had a long association with the Curramulka area. The name Curramulka is derived from the aboriginal word "Gory" which translates as Emu and the word "Moolka" meaning a stone water hole. As the local aboriginals used this word when describing the area, the settlers who came adopted the name, resulting in the township and the Hundred being know as Curramulka.
The water hole at which the Emus and other wild life gathered, is situated west of the township.
In 2018 the community raised money to purchase the Emu to commemorate the origins of the name of the town.
