The memorial acknowledges the history of the peoples of Dareton and Coomealla. 

The cairn was originally located in the school grounds and was unveiled as a war memorial in 1933. The cairn was removed from the school to Tapio Park in 2009 to make way for a new library. The plaques were added to the cairn in during the Dareton - Coomealla 90th celebrations held over the long weekend in June 2015.
