Australian Bicentenary - Carrathool BridgePrint Page 
The plaque on the Carrathool Bridge was erected to commemorate the bicentenary of Australia in 1988. The plaque gives details of the historic bridge.
The Bicentenary marked the 200th anniversary of the arrival of the First Fleet in Sydney in 1788. Captain Arthur Phillip (1738–1814), commander of the First Fleet, established the foundations of a British colony at Sydney Cove on the 26 January 1788.

CARRATHOOL BRIDGE
Over Murrumbidgee River
This type of bascule lift span was adapted from a US design
in 1903 by Public Works Department engineer, Harvey Dare.
Only two others remain - at Coraki and near Maclean. Built
by Messrs Poole and Steel to replace a punt, it cost
£29,002 15s 11d, shared between PWD (half), Carrathool and
Murrumbidgee Shires. Opened on 24 July 1924, ribbons were
cut by Mrs Varcoe and Mrs Campbell, wives of Carathool
and Murrumbidge Shire Presidents.
