Four sculptures commemorate the convict women and their children who were transported to Van Diemen`s Land (Tasmania). The sculptures are at the location where they disembarked after their journey.
The project called Footsteps Towards Freedom tells the untold stories through the artwork about Hunter Island, the arrival point for many women and children who came to Tasmania in the 19th century.
From 1803 to 1853, almost 13,000 convict women together with 2,000 children arrived in Van Diemen’s Land.
