Vietnamese Boat People Monument of GratitudePrint Page
The monument commemorates the Vietnamese refugees who died whilst fleeing South Vietnam after the end of the Vietnam War, and the gratitude to Australia, for embracing the Vietnamese refugees.
After the end of the Vietnam War, over a million South Vietnamese fled their country, piling onto small fishing boats, and set out on the South China Sea in search of safety. Many refugees went to Australia, Canada, France and the United States of America. The United Nations estimated that over 200,000 refugees lost their lives at sea.
