The statue of Matthew Flinders was commissioned by the Shire of Mornington in 1987 to commemorate Australia's Bicentenary in 1988. 

A plaque relating to the sculpture is located on the base of the flagpole in the park.

The Matthew Flinders sculpture was commissioned by the Shire of Mornington in commemoration of the Australia Bicentenary in this Muncipality.

Sculpted by Mark Clark during 1987 and cast in bronze.  It is the first significant work of sculpture to enhance the parklands of the Shire of Mornington.
