Stuart Highway
In 1862, John McDouall Stuart led the first north-south crossing of Australia from Adelaide to Darwin. The Highway that now bears his name began as a series of tracks linking homesteads.
In 1979 the South Australian and Federal Governments undertook to provide a sealed road to the Northern Territory and at a cost of $140m sealing of the road was completed on 15 February 1987.
This Highway traverses some of the most inhospitable country in the world and is a monument to the pioneers, past and present, who opened Australia`s outback.
