The plaque commemorating the bicentenary of Australia details the history of West Wallsend.

The Bicentenary marked the 200th anniversary of the arrival of the First Fleet in Sydney in 1788. Captain Arthur Phillip (1738-1814), commander of the First Fleet, established the foundations of a British colony at Sydney Cove on the 26 January 1788.

West Wallsend
A Colliery township founded by the West Wallsend Coal
Company and subdivided in 1887. Collieries of the area were :
1888  West Wallsend, Newcastle New-Wallsend later
           West Wallsend extended (Killingworth)
1890  Monkwearmouth (Later Seaham No. 1)
1905  Seaham No. 2
1971  West Wallsend No. 2 ( still operating 1988)
West Wallsend Colliery was a pioneer in the use of an all-metal
headframe in the Australian Colonies.
An historic sites Bicentennial Project funded by the
Australian Bicentennial Authority and the Lake Macquarie
City Council to celebrate Australia`s Bicentenary.
