A plaque commemorates the restoration of the historic horse trough by pupils of the Boggabri Public School to commemorate Australia's bicentenary in 1988.  The trough, which was erected in 1873, was used for many years to water the horses that provided the only means of transport for the school children who lived in the outlying areas and who rode to school each day.

The bicentenary of Australia was celebrated in 1988. It marked 200 years since the arrival of the First Fleet of British convict ships at Sydney in 1788. 1988 is considered the official bicentenary year of the founding of Australia.
