The plaque commemorates a series of trees planted in Byrnes and Mammino Streets in 1977 to to commemorate the pioneers of Mareeba.

The trees were planted during Mareeba's centenary year. The stone and inscription plaque were unveiled in 1997. 

Plaques which pertain to the trees planted are also located in the park.
