The plaque commemorates the 150th anniversary of the commencement of the Victorian Exploration Expedition. The expedition set out from Royal Park in Melbourne on 20 August 1860.
The plaque includes a memorial map of the historic Burke and Wills expedition and is located in front of the original free-standing plaque at the Burke & Wills Monument.
The commemorative plaque was coordinated by the Castlemaine Pioneers and Old Residents and designed and made by local residents. It was financed through local contributions and a grant from the Mount Alexander Shire Council.
