Memory CovePrint Page
The plaque commemorates the naming of the cove by Matthew Flinders. The plaque is a replica of a copper plate that Matthew Flinders left on a post to record an accident which took the lives of eight crewmen in whose memory the cove was named.
His Majesty`s Ship, `Investigator`, with Matthew Flinders as Commander, anchored at Memory Cove in February 1802. Mr John Thistle, the Master, Mr William Taylor, Midshipman, and six of the crew were unfortunately drowned nearby when their boat capsized. The wreck of the boat was found but their bodies were not recovered.
