The memorial cairn marks the site of the Burke and Wills Expedition`s Clump Camp XIV.
The Burke and Wills Clump is an area of land beside the Murray Valley Highway containing eight box trees, the remnants of a timber belt marking the likely 14th campsite of the Burke and Wills journey. The site has significant associations with the ill-fated expedition of two of Australian history's most notorious and celebrated explorers.
The area has, since the early 1990s, been curated and cared for by local community members, who formed the "Burke and Wills Clump Project Sub-committee". The Sub-committee has been involved in maintaining the trees, revegetating the area and creating an interpretive roadside stop with a commemorative cairn and brass plaque.

THE BURKE AND WILLS CLUMP
Camp Site No. 14 - sixteen days out of Melbourne.
In This Vicinity On Wednesday 5th September 1860,
Burke And Wills Camped On Their Way To The Gulf
Of Carpentaria. In The Expedition Were 22 Men
Including 3 Afghan Camel Drivers, 23 Horses, 26
Camels And 3 Large Covered Wagons.
"At 9.00 a.m. We Left That Nice Spot Reddy Lake And
Arrived At A Belt Of Timber Between Lake
Tutchiwap And Lake Boga. Here We Camped. The
Distance Travelled Today Was 18 Miles."
