150th Anniversary of John McDouall Stuart ExpeditionPrint Page
The stone monument marks the point where Stuart and his party passed through the region on the 12th July 1862 and reached the coast at Point Stuart on 24th July. On the return journey the expedition passed this location on 31st July 1862.
The plaque near the monument, commemorates the 150th anniversary of explorer John McDouall Stuart`s expedition in 1861-62 , which was the first crossing of the continent from south to north.

The South Australia Great Northern Exploring Expedition
under the command of
JOHN McDOUALL STUART
in 1861 - 62, utilising this route.

Principally as a result of Stuart`s expeditions :
the geographical nature of the Centre was revealed ; South Australia annexed the Northern Territory; the Overland Telegraph Line linking Adelaide to the world, via Darwin, was constructed along this route and the original Ghan railway line to Alice Springs, subsequently followed a similar route.
