Vietnamese Boat PeoplePrint Page
The sculpture of a women and child honours those refugees who died while making their way to Australia.
The term ‘boat people’ entered the Australian vernacular in the 1970s with the arrival of the first wave of boats carrying people seeking asylum from the aftermath of the Vietnam War. Over half the Vietnamese population was displaced in these years and, while most fled to neighbouring Asian countries, some embarked on the voyage by boat to Australia. More than 2 million sought to escape South Vietnam after it succumbed to Communist rule in 1975.
Vietnamese boat people suffered many problems including hunger, storms, pirates, getting lost and capsizing on their journeys. It is was unclear exactly how many people died while trying to travel to other countries but the number was estimated to be as high as 500,000.
