The Victoria Rotunda was erected to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria`s reign.

Victoria (24 May 1819 – 22 January 1901) was Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland from 20 June 1837 until her death. From 1 May 1876, she adopted the additional title of Empress of India. With a reign of 63 years, seven months and two days, Victoria was the longest -reigning British monarch and the longest-reigning queen regnant in world history until her great-great-granddaughter Queen Elizabeth II surpassed her on 9 September 2015.

Queen Victoria`s birthday, 24th May, used to be called `Empire Day`. There were special assemblies at school with songs praising the British Empire. Children were then given a half-day holiday. Up to the 1950s, Empire Day was celebrated in Australia with huge bonfires and fireworks.

The cloudy weather which prevailed during the past week had disappeared on Tuesday, and a bright bracing morning dawned upon many happy hearts in Kadina. Queen's weather it was in earnest!  A few days ago the most queenly weather that could possibly have visited us, would have been a good downpour of rain, but that has come and left behind light hearts that were before heavy, and enabled hundreds to join joyously in the celebrations in honour of the record reign.

The Mayor said he would not make a lengthy oration, but had a pleasing duty to perform in introducing Capt. Hancock whom he would ask to lay the foundation stone of the Victoria Rotunda, and on behalf of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Committee presented him with a handsome silver trowel. The stone having been declared " well and truly laid," Captain Hancock, received with cheers said —The good people of Kadina and many here today unite with a grand throng throughout the empire to do homage to the Queen in celebrating her record reign.
