Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth IIPrint Page
The tree commemorates the Platinum Jubilee of the reign of Queen Elizabeth II and acknowledges her 70 years of service as Australia`s Head of State.
City of Albany received funding of $18,000 from the Queen`s Platinum Jubilee Tree Planting Program which will run from 2021-2024. The project will plant an oak tree, install a commemorative plaque and hold an event in honour of The Queen’s Jubilee. This will beautify the street and raise awareness of The Queen's Jubilee.
Elizabeth II (21 April 1926 – 8 September 2022) was Queen of the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth realms from 6 February 1952 until her death in 2022. She was queen regnant of 32 sovereign states during her lifetime, and was head of state of 15 realms at the time of her death. Her reign of 70 years and 214 days was the longest of any British monarch and the longest verified reign of any female monarch in history.
In 2022 Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II became the first Australian Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee after 70 years of service. The City of Albany commemorated this significant occasion with a tree planting this month. The City received an $18,000 grant from the Australian Government for the planting of an Oak tree in recognition of The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.
Local Governments, community groups, businesses and schools have all been given the chance to apply for this grant and come together in a nation-wide commemorative tree planting initiative.
As Australia’s longest serving Head of State, The Queen served the Commonwealth with passion, conviction and loyalty. Planting the commemorative Oak tree is in honour of her service.
Mayor Dennis Wellington said planting the tree was a fitting honour for The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee marking her long reign as the nation’s Head of State. “It will be unlikely we will see a 70 year Platinum Jubilee celebration again,” Mayor Wellington said. “For many of us, The Queen has been the only Head of State that we have known in our lifetimes and that is something remarkable. The Platinum Jubilee Oak tree will not only commemorate what has been a long and successful reign for The Queen, but honour her service to the Commonwealth as we bid farewell.”
The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Oak tree was planted in Victoria Square Gardens on Lower Stirling Terrace on Monday 17 October at 10am.
