The plaque was erected by the Australian Agricultural Company to commemorate Joseph Woodlands and the crew of the Carrington who perished on the 19th May 1842 when the company's schooner was wrecked in a gale and lost on the north head of Port Stephens.

Source: H, MATo the memory of Joseph Woodlands and the crew of the A A Company's schooner Carrington who perished on the night of the 19th May 1842 when that vessel was wrecked in a terrific gale and was irrecoverably lost on the North Head of Port Stephens.
This stone as a tribute of respect was erected at the expence of the Company.
