The monument which includes the bell of the ship, commemorates the sinking of the "S.S. Maitland" with the loss of 24 lives.
In 1898 labouring into a frightening gale, the Maitland was driven onto the foot of East Reef, Broken Bay. Giant seas snapped the steamer in two and 24 people were swept of the deck and drowned .The tragic death toll of appalled the population. Remembered as the "Maitland Gale", it also claimed the schooners Amelia White, Philip Palfrey, Adelaide, Isabel, J.G. Kondio; the ketch Coral; the barquentine Fido; the ship Hereward and the steamers Ethel, Merksworth and Saxonia.

This memorial was erected by the Brisbane Water Historical Society'
To commemorate the wreck of S.S. Maitland, on night of 5th May 1898 with the loss of 26 lives.
