The plaque commemorates the 30th Anniversary of the Granville train disaster.

The Granville rail disaster occurred on 18 January 1977 at Granville, a suburb in Western Sydney, when a crowded commuter train derailed, running into the supports of a road bridge which came down onto two of its passenger carriages. Eighty-three people died, more than 210 were injured.  It is the worst rail disaster in Australian history based on loss of life.

Rescuers performed extraordinary feats of bravery to stay with some of the injured in some areas of the wrecked carriages considered too dangerous. The last body was not removed until 31 hours after the accident. An inquiry exonerated the train`s driver and fireman, finding the accident was caused by poorly maintained tracks.
