The monument commemorates workers who died during the construction of the Picton Railway Viaduct in 1863. The memorial was erected by their workmates.
The large stone viaduct, the second in New South Wales, was constructed over Stonequarry Creek , commencing in 1862. It is built entirely of sandstone blocks, has five 40 foot arches, is 276 feet long and 78 feet above the creek bed at its highest point.
