The monument unveiled by Alain Mimoun, the Gold Medallist in the marathon in the 1956 Olympics, commemorates the halfway turning point of the 1956 Olympic Marathon race.

Representing France, Mimoun achieved his greatest success in Melbourne after winning three silver medals at the 1948 and 1952 Olympics behind the legendary Czech runner Emil Zatopek.

This marker has been placed by the City of Monash and Athletics International at the half-way turning point of the 1956 Olympic Marathon to commemorate this event. 

The gold medal winner, Alain Mimoun of France, unveiled this marker on 20th November 1999
