The 7 metre cross commemorates the Christian faith of the early district pioneers and was erected as a Jubilee 2000 project.

Jubilee 2000 was an international coalition movement in over 40 countries that called for cancellation of third world debt by the year 2000. This movement coincided with the Great Jubilee, the celebration of the year 2000 in the Catholic Church. Sustained support from Christians and others across the world led to the cancellation of more than $100billion of debt owed by 35 of the poorest countries.
