The cairn commemorates Zion Lutheran Church which functioned from 1875 to 1960.
The Zion Lutheran Church started services in 1871 with the church opening in 1875. It split into two congregations in 1884 with St. Johns church built in 1885. With the amalgamation of Lutheran Churches in 1956 Zion Lutheran closed in 1960. The Zion Church was demolished in 1981 but the cemetery remains.
