The plaque commemorates the 200th anniversary of the laying of St Matthew`s Foundation Stone by Governor Lachlan Macquarie on the 11th October 1817.
Money was deposited in the foundation stone and it was removed on the same day it was laid. The corner stone was relaid 13th October 1817 and the coins placed underneath it were also stolen.
