A garden commemorates the Year of Mourning for the Aboriginal people and to all those who died as a result of contact with non-indigenous people.

The Day of Mourning was a protest held by Aboriginal Australians on 26 January 1938, the 150th anniversary of British colonisation of Australia. 1988 was named a “Year of Mourning” for Aboriginal people, and also regarded as a celebration of survival.
