The soldier statue commemorates those from Rutherglen and surrounding Districts who died in service or were killed in action in World War One. The statue is a tribute to the 3000 volunteers from Rutherglen and surrounding districts who enlisted to serve in the 1914 to 1918 war. 

Funding for the statue was received through the ANZAC Centenary Grants Program. The statue was unveiled to coincide with the centenary of ANZAC commemorations and 100 years of service by the Rutherglen R.S.L.
