The plaques on the Yongala Institute wall commemorate people who have lived or worked in the District of Yongala.
The coldest place in South Australia blazed brightly on Saturday when an unique heritage wall was opened at the town hall. Dozens of aluminium plaques marking families from the past now adorn the wall of the toilet block built onto the hall. There is an awning over the display which features a glass case containing historic documents and a view-it-yourself relic machine.
About 140 people, including guests from Melbourne and Canberra, sat in the shade as speakers lamented the decline in population in the district, but praised the continuing community spirit. Liberal Member for Stuart Dan van Holst Pellekaan unveiled the display after saying that perhaps in 100 years’ time people would be amazed at the close-knit community that had today gathered at the site for the opening.
Guests queued to look at the plaques and take photographs.
President of the hall committee Steve Jacka introduced Andrew Bailey who dedicated the pathway beside the wall as the Ron Bailey Walk in memory of his late father “who never forgot his roots in Yongala”.
