This bell was originally presented to the St. Michael`s Gnadenfrei Congregation by a member, Mr. Leopold Schmidt, at the dedication on 8 / 12 / 1874 of the second church to be built on this site. The bell hung in a wooden belfry erected on the southern side of the church.
In 1913 when the church was extended and the main belfry added, the bell was relocated to the church school situtated east of the present day Band Hall. The building, including the teacher`s residence, was erected in 1862 and was the third school for the District. The bell hung from a tree trunk in the school yard.
Due to increasing student numbers a new government school was erected in 1922 on the south eastern side of the nearby intersection. The bell and tree trunk were relocated to the new site. In December 1994 the school closed due to declining student numbers, and so after 120 years of service to the Gnadenfrei District the bell has been returned to St. Michael`s and now stands as a memorial to all who have worshipped and studied in its shadow.
