Tree of KnowledgePrint Page
The plaque commemorates the "Tree of Knowledge".
For over a hundred years Payneham was described as a small agricultural village where farmers ploughed wheat fields, market gardens and vineyards. The hub of the village was located in the area around the Duke of Wellington Hotel, and across the road at Post Office Corner. Folklore has it that while locals were waiting for the mail they would gather under a huge tree they named the "Tree of Knowledge" and exchange news or gossip.
