FIRE BELL
When recently in Sydney Mr D H Tasker very thoughtfully, as well as generously, purchased a large bell, which he has subsequently donated to the local fire brigade. Preparation is now being made for hanging the bell for public use on the brigades land adjacent to the Post Office, two large dressed poles having being presented to the brigade for that purpose by Messrs Nicolas and Raymond. The bell, when placed in position, will be about 18` from the ground, and have a scaffold below it from which it will be rung by hand, the scaffold will be reached by a ladderway. The following signals, adopted by the brigade, should prove an interest and worthy of being learned by all who have property in town and, therefore may yet have cause to use the bell ; - One dong after continuous ringing, signifies that the fire is in the east; Two, that the fire is in the north ; Three, that the fire is in the west ; And, four, that the fire is in the south ; bell is not to continue ringing after the reel has left the station ; the bell is not to be rung for chimney fires.
