The sundial commemorates the work of the Australian Legion of Ex-Servicemen and Women in the Burnie area. The sundial was unveiled in 1988 and contains a 1987 Burnie sub-branch plaque in memory of all who served. In 1999, and additional plaque was placed on the sundial to commemorate the 55th anniversary of the Legion in Burnie.
The Australian Legion of Ex-Servicemen and Women is an ex-service association. Formed in December 1944 from a number of existing organisations, membership of the legion is open to all ex-service personnel, including British Commonwealth and Allied personnel, and former members of the peacetime Australian regular and reserve forces.
