Vicksburg MonumentPrint Page
The monument commemorates the Camp Cable dog mascot "Vicksburg" who was killed in a road accident at Southport.
Vicksburg was an American dog of mixed lineage but resembling a basset hound. When the monument was first erected it contained a photograph of `Vicki`, the dog, but vandals stole this as well as the brass plates on one of the other monuments in the 1960s.
The vandalism caused local outrage and following the recovery of one of the brass plates a rededication ceremony was held on 1 September 1968.
Note: As of 2012, the Camp Cable Memorials were removed from their original site to Logan Village RSL, 82 Quinzeh Creek Road, Logan Village to make way for development roadworks.
