Great War Horses MemorialPrint Page
The monument commemorates Australian horses used in World War One. It was rededicated by the children of the area on the 11th November 2000.
The Commissioner of Crown Lands (Mr.Mclntosh) and the State President of the R.S.S.I.L (Colonel Ross Jacob) visited Barmera on November 30th on the occasion of the unveiling of a memorial to Australian horses. Mr McIntosh complimented the diggers on the splendid memorial they had raised to their old comrades, the horses of the Great War. Colonel Jacob spoke of the work done and the part played by the Australian horses in the Great War.
It was fitting that the men of the Light Horse units should raise a memorial to them. Colonel Jacob unveiled the marble tablet inscribed, 'To commemorate the splendid work of the Australian horses in the Great War.' The tablet surmounts a substantially built horse trough erected in the main avenue of Barmera.

REDEDICATED BY THE CHILDREN OF THE AREA
WITH REV. T ROGERS
ON THE 11TH OF NOVEMBER 2000
The Children Gather Here Each Year
For A Service That's Quite Rare
It Is Not For Men Or Women
But The Horses That Were There.
They Carried Out Their Many Tasks
Around The Battle Field
And Rarely Lacked Endurance Or
Vitality And Zeal.
So Here Each Year They Lay A Wreath
For The One Who Feared No Chore
A Very Gallant Animal
The Horse Of The Great War.
