Front Inscription

Royal Australian Air Force Memorial

World War II 1939 - 1945

During the Second World War 215,000 Australian men and women enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force to defend Australia against the forces of tyranny and oppression, so that the light of freedom and humanity might continue to shine.

They fought in Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, over the North Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans and the Mediterranean ; in India, Burma, Malaya, Singapore, Thailand, China, The Netherlands East Indies, New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, the Philippines and Borneo.

They also fought over Australia, its Territories and approaches.

Thousands of them served on attachment with the Royal Air Force, other Commonwealth Air Forces and the U.S. Air Force where they served with gallantry and distinction.

This memorial is dedicated to the memory of these men and women who served in freedom`s cause, those who died and those who survived.

May we and our successors prove worthy of their sacrifice.
