The memorial commemorates the Royal Australian Navy ship, H.M.A.S. Cowra and its crew. 

H.M.A.S. Cowra (J351/M351), was named for the town of Cowra and was  one of 60 Bathurst class corvettes constructed during World War Two, and one of 36 initially manned and commissioned solely by the Royal Australian Navy.
