456 Squadron RAAF 1941 -1945
456 Squadron RAAF was formed in June 1941 and flew Boulton Paul Defiant, Bristol Beaufighter and de Havilland Mosquito nightfighters over England and Europe.
In addition to intercepting German aircraft over England at night, 456 Squadron took part in "Ranger" offensive missions over occupied Europe. In this role, day or night, the squadron achieved considerable fame for destroying trains.
456 Squadron covered the D-Day landings in June 1944 and destroyed many enemy aircraft at night over the landing areas and was successful in shooting down V-1 flying bombs.
The squadron also operated against German airfields as distant as Berlin in support of Bomber Command raids.
456 Squadron disbanded in June 1945.
