The gates were erected to commemorate past students and teachers who served in World War Two.

The ambition of the Tully Rural School Committee to erect a fitting memorial to past students and teachers who served in the forces during the Second World War was realised with the unveiling of the memorial gates at the entrance to the school on the 10th July 1948. The gates consist of four pillars surmounted by an arch bearing the name of the school. Embodied in each of the two central pillars are honour rolls of marble on which are engraved the names of one hundred past pupils and teachers who served in World War Two. Mr T Briggs, President of the RSL performed the unveiling ceremony.
