The gates commemorate those who died in service or were killed in action during World War Two and lists their names on marble tablets. The gates also contain the names of those who served.
In May 1954, the War Memorial Committee accepted a tender of approximately £1000 for the erection of memorial gates to the fallen of the 1939 - 1945 war. At that time donations totalled £350 but the committee planned to raise the balnce with futher donations expected once the work had commenced.

These memorial gates were unveiled by His Excellency Sir Henry Abel Smith K.C.V., D.S.C. Governor of Queensland on the Second of May 1959.
