The plaque records the names of 54 civilians killed in the bombing raid on Darwin in 1942.
The first enemy attack on Australian soil in the history of the Commonwealth of Australia occurred at 9.58am on Thursday 19 February 1942. The small Northern Territory town of Darwin suffered an air-raid attack by 188 Japanese aircraft. More than 240 civilians and Australian and US service personnel were killed, and eight ships were sunk in Darwin Harbour. At the time of the attack the civilian population numbered less than 2000.

This plaque was erected by the citizens of Darwin in memory of the civilians who lost their lives in the bombing raid on Darwin of 19th February, 1942 and was unveiled by His Excellency The Right Honourable Sir Paul Hasluck G.C.M.G., G.C.V.O., K.St. J, Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia on 19th February, 1971.
