War Memorial Oval Print Page
The oval commemorates those who served in World War Two. The original gates at the entrance to the oval were opened in 1950 and contained two bronze plaques which served as the honour roll for the district. The original gates have been removed and the entrance is now brick pillars which contain the original plaques.
A Cross of Sacrifice with the wording "Lest We Forget" has been placed at the oval entrance.
At a meeting of the Minnipa War Memorial Committee, held at Minnipa recently, plans were adopted to proceed with the erection of the Memorial Gates at Goldsbrough's corner. The design for the gates was submitted by Mr. C. T. Pain, and with minor alterations to the original drawings, the constructional work has now been placed in his hands. He anticipates laying the foundations for the memorial at an early date. The committee has ordered a pair of driveway gates and two hand gates, at a cost of £32/10/-; also two bronze plaques estimated at £49. These plaques will serve as the honour roll for the district and will be fixed in the columns on either side of the gateway.

The State president of the RSL (Mr. A. S. Blackburn, VC) will open the Minnipa War Memorial Oval and unveil the honor roll on Saturday. The oval will be used for the first time when Minnipa and Rover football teams play on it after the ceremony.

The War Memorial gates at the Minnipa Oval were opened by the State president of the RSL (Mr. A. S. Blackburn VC) who also unveiled the roll of honor. Mr. Blackburn said that although it was only five years since the war ended, there was already a tendency to forget the sacrifices made, and for people to become wrapped up in themselves. The gates were a reminder to them that they owed their liberties and rights to those who served. The gates were dedicated by the Rev. J. Furmister, after which the secretary of the Minnipa sub-branch called the names of those appearing on the roll. The president (Mr. H. Habner) thanked the official party. The chairman of the memorial committee (Mr. H. E. Broad) presided. Mr. Wilson MLC commended the people of Minnipa for the project under which all sporting bodies had the use of the oval.
