The plaque commemorates the 39th Infantry Battalion which was raised at Darley Camp in October 1941.  

The commemoration of the formation of the 39th Battalion at Darley took place on the Sunday 3rd of October 2010. This marked the 69th anniversary of the formation of the unit.

Raised at Darley Camp October 1941.

Being the first troops to cross the Kokoda Track, they were withdrawn from action January 1943 with only 7 officers and 25 other ranks remaining.
