The memorial commemorates those who served on H.M.A.S. Armidale during World War Two.
The corvette H.M.A.S. Armidale was commissioned on June 11, 1942 to resupply and evacuate troops and civilians from Betano Bay, Timor in World War Two. It was attacked by Japanese aircraft on December 1 and sank within five minutes.
There were 149 crew on board, only 51 of whom survived. Named after Australian towns, corvettes were lightly armed and very crowded. Initially carrying between 60 and 80 men, the size of the crews increased as the ship`s equipment became more sophisticated.
