The mural commemorates the 1053 Australian soldiers and civilians who were killed in the sinking of the Japanese Prisoner of War ship Montevideo Maru was torpedoed by the United States Navy submarine USS Sturgeon near Luzon in the South China Sea during World War Two on the 1st July 1942. All those on board the Montevideo Maru were killed.
The Stanhope connection to the tragedy is that three local families (Crombie, McLennan and Meldrum) who had sons who were killed and two other families (Crichton & Ryan) have relatives in the town today.
Funding was received in January 2022 through the Saluting Their Service Program for the production of the mural.
