The former Lambton Memorial Baby Health Centre was erected to commemorate those who served in World War Two. The building is now used as a cafe.
The Lord Mayor (Ald. Quinlan) will open Lambton Memorial Baby Health Centre on Saturday, at 3 p.m. Mrs. E. J. Edwards will unveil the memorial tablets erected to the memory of ex-servicemen and women of Lambton. A march of schoolchildren from the corner of Lambton Park will precede the unveiling ceremony. Newcastle Pipe Band will play. Representatives of the Department of Public Health (Drs. Grace Cuthbert and R. Shannon), aldermen and executive officers of Greater Newcastle Council, and members of Lambton New Lambton R.S.L. sub-branch will attend. The centre, built in Lambton Park, facing Elder-street contains a waiting room, two consulting rooms, test feeding room, kitchen, staff quarters and toilets.
A pram park is to be located near the front entrance. When fully furnished, the centre will have cost about £3300. The plans, prepared by Greater Newcastle Council, were approved by the Director of Maternal and Baby Health (Dr. Cuthbert) in 1944. In 1945, the National Fitness Group and Lambton Patriotic and Welfare Committee combined to further the scheme under the title of the Lambton Memorial Baby Health Centre Committee. The committee raised £580, and, in 1946, £500 was presented by the council to the cost of the building, which was erected this year. Three bronze tablets - two memorial tablets for the entrance gates, and a dedication tablet for the front of the building - were bought by the committee.
