Memorial GatesPrint Page
The gates commemorate those from the District who served in World War Two.
On July 1 McLean's Ridges Hall will be reopened with a grand ball. The hall has been enlarged and extended by 12ft. floor space with 12ft. on the supper room, also a 10 x 8ft. vestibule. In front of the hall a cement path has been laid down. A new galvanised pipe fence, with cement posts, has been erected on both road frontages. The kitchen also has been renovated. The whole of this work has been done by the local residents, with a foreman in charge in the early stages. Almost 100 per cent, co-operation has been given in the construction, which is a tribute to the civic pride of district residents.
In 1902 the hall was erected with all extras, including painting, for the sum of £113 10s 11d. The fence around the hall was erected at 4s 6d a rod. This hall then had been known as a School of Arts. The hall was erected on the corner of the late Sam McLean's farm, from whence came the name of McLean's Ridges. The names of the first committeemen which might bring back some old memories were Mr. H. Gibson, president; vice-president, W. Talbot; secretary, P.J. McLaughlin; treasurer, D. Newberry; auditor, John Gibson. On Empire Day memorial gates were opened with large cement posts, on which are inscribed 17 names of the district's young people who volunteered for service. The gates give a finished appearance to the hall and its grounds Cpl. Keith MurraY, R. A.A.F., Japan, donated two large flags—a Union Jack and Australian Flag— for unveiling of the gates. They became the property of the Hall Committee.
