The tree planting scheme depicted above was carried out on Saturday, 3rd August, 1946, in Norvill Memorial Park to honour those of Blandford and District who rendered service during World War 2.  The scheme was designed to be in effect a living war memorial and is this described :

Group 1 :-  Planted in the form of a "V", the symbol for victory consists of upright pines, upright as those whose memory they will perpetuate.

Group 2 :- At the head of the "V", a line of gums, typical Australian trees whose majestic height and strength symbolise the courage and powess (sic) of the Australian soldier.

Group 3 :- Within the "V", a group of poplars in the form of a cross, dedicated to the fallen and repressenting (sic) the Cross of Christianity beneath the cross of the Australian sky.  The cross points to the east to signify the hope that from the Cross of Sacrifice may dawn a better era.  The autumn tints will recall golden deeds, and falling leaves, fallen heroes.

Group 4 :- Within the arms of the cross, four spreading evergreens representing Charity, Justice, Tolerance, Co-operation - four principles which must be kept evergreen and spread through civic, national and international life if peace is to be real and lasting.

Lest We Forget
