The monument commemorates the German sailors from the merchant cruiser HSK "Kormoran" who died or were killed during an engagement which sunk the H.M.A.S. Sydney in November 1941 of the coast of Western Australia. The memorial lists the names of those who lost their lives.
The Kormoran was also sunk in this engagement, but 317 of its crew of 397 were rescued. The rescued survivors arrived at Camp 13 in Murchison, Victoria on 30th December 1941.
On 17 March 2008 the Australian Government announced that the wreckage of both HMAS Sydney and the German raider Kormoran had been found, approximately 112 nautical miles off Steep Point, Western Australia.
