The shelter commemorates those who served in World War One.

The shelter was created in 1997 after realising that the identities and lives of the men on the Dangarsleigh War Memorial were largely unknown. The construction of the shelter was made possible by a grant from the Department of Veteran’s Affairs, Council and donations from the ANZAC services held at the Monument each year. Local woman Judy Grieve researched the stories of the men whose names are on the war memorial.

The Dangarsleigh War Memorial Shelter was found destroyed by fire on the morning of December 23, 2011. The remains of a burnt out car which had been driven under the structure were close by. The Dangarsleigh Local Area Committee rebuilt the shelter.
